At the old Manor House: We plan to create the ambience of a homely stay in an environment of relaxing enjoyment with a hearty breakfast for all guests whatever their length of stay.
At The Old Manor House You can expect a warm and friendly welcome from both Helen and Dave the owners of this out of the ordinary Bed and Breakfast House The Old Manor House is a Grade II listed Victorian property; with the original part of the building said to be dated around 1840. Despite this village effectively now forming part of the Weymouth built-up area, Mill Street is not yet entirely spoilt. It still boasts the charm of it,s old mill houses constructed of local Portland stone and enhanced by their stone mullion windows
Mill street leads down to the sparkling stream The Wey which originates in the entrancing village of Upwey and sets out on its six mile run to Weymouth. The area boasts the inspiration for some of Thomas Hardy,s greatest novels the Mill in Upwey being the inspiration in Trumpet Major and it was on the ridge of the hills of Upwey, looking over the Chesil beach to the channel that Thomas Hardy wrote the opening scene of The Dynasts his greatest piece of work.
Next door to the Old Manor is the St Nicholas parish church which the Normans began building. It contains some beautiful stone carvings and a carved oak pulpit of Shakespeare's time.
This rural setting is on the outskirts of Weymouth and approximately only five miles from Dorchester; within a short drive visitors can explore the Jurassic coastline now a World Heritage Site.
Dorset is an unusual county in that there are no motorways devouring the landscape; it is largely rural, peaceful and unspoilt, an ideal place to escape the rat race. There are some excellent walks and cycle routes locally for those keen on the great outdoors and pubs within a mile which all serve good food not forgetting the vast choice in the historic town of Weymouth.
